Next outta ATL

Atlanta has served as a starting point for many great artists such as Usher, Outkast,Young Jeezy, B.o.B, and of course Soulja Boy. However, in the past few years the hip hop music scene in the ATL has been changing. A place that once bred great artists now spits out one-hit wonders year after year. We now have Travis Porter, Trinidad James, OJ da Juiceman, and Roscoe Dash to put on for the city. There is one hope for true originality and artistry yet.

Meet Russ. He has been gaining a lot of momentum over the past few years and is developing his fanbase rapidly.

What makes this artist unique in comparison to other Atlanta rappers?

First, his sound is different than the typical artist from Georgia. Not only can his originality be heard in his self-produced beats, but his voice is not identifiable as Southern. His unique sound is very catchy and has a lot of mass appeal. With his beat making skills and one-of-a-kind vocals his marketability is limitless. Look out, Drake.

He has built his fanbase totally on his own through Facebook, twitter, and live shows. He used a  viral marketing strategy to spread his music. It has proven to be very effective so far as he sells out shows in other countries such as Belgium. This is the beauty of social media. We can now reach a much wider audience in much more simple ways

His whole discography can be found at

  1. Social media is a good way for artists to be discovered but it’s often difficult due to the volume of noise (pardon the pun) from competing artists, ads, and worthless chatter. People thrive on being the first to discover new artists so an outlet like Soundcloud is a must for people like Russ. Personally, I go to Soundcloud for all of the music none of my friends listen to. With that said, I’ve seen artists release a few tracks on Soundcloud and be on the radio a week later. Also, he should consider releasing some of his tracks on Reddit along with a bio and a request for feedback. Reddit is more of a community based social outlet and users love to help each other out in ways that are just not possible on Bandcamp, Soundcloud, etc.

    Thanks for the share!
